Je vous propose pour l’inauguration officielle de la catégorie ‘Collection’ le retour sur l’album Run Devil Run de Paul McCartney sorti il y a sept ans, en 1999.
Cet album faisait suite à la mort de Linda est en fait un hommage présenté sous forme d’un retour aux racines rock’n’roll de Paul. Ainsi peut-on y trouver de nombreuses reprises de chansons d’Elvis Presley, Big Joe Turner, Carl Perkins, Gene Vincent, et Chuck Berry. Mais il est à noter que cet album comporte aussi trois chansons inédites de Paul McCartney du même ton. L’hommage à sa femme est évident grâce à la présence de l’inscription « L.I.L.Y. » sur le booklet du CD, qui, rappelons le, signifie « Linda I Love You », et que Paul utilisait beaucoup lors de ses premiers albums solos, comme sur Ram pour n’en citer qu’un.

Blue Jean Bop: » I remember hearing Blue Jean Bop on an album that I think John had; going to a place near Penny Lane for the afternoon, having a ciggy, and just listening to records. Blue Jean Bop was always one of my favourites. The first record I ever bought was Be Bop A Lula. We loved Gene. »
She Said Yeah: » Me and John particularly loved Larry Williams… Bony Moronie… John did Slow Down. I was always gonna do She Said Yeah. »
All Shook Up: » Me and a mate used to go around the fairgrounds of Liverpool trying to pick up girls; we got the blues ’cause we couldn’t even get arrested. We’d go home depressed, and put on this record and it lifted us, got rid of the blues. »
Run Devil Run: » I saw this herbal medicine shop in Atlanta selling Run Devil Run products. I thought that is a great rock’n’roll title. So I did a story, Chuck Berry style. »
No Other Baby: » I have no idea how this one got so embedded in my memory… I never had the record, still haven’t. »
Lonesome Town: » I liked Ricky Nelson… Stood Up, Believe What You Say… but I loved Lonesome Town. It’s like Heartbreak Hotel, it’s a place we all know. »
Try Not To Cry: » I just wrote a bluesy song that never gets in the way of the snare. It was actually that simple. »
Movie Magg: » I knew Carl, he was a great old country boy who used to pick cotton and he’d have all these stories. This one is about his girlfriend Maggie, who he’d sometimes take to the movies on his mule, old Becky. They had no car so they rode to the movie show. And it’s true. »
Brown Eyed Handsome Man: » We wanted to put an accordion on our version, make it slightly cajun, just to get it away from Buddy’s a bit. »
What He is: » I was playing bluesy riffs on the piano and this song started to come out. Linda was there and I enjoyed it just for that, for the feedback she gave. So I thought I’ll do that as sort of my little tribute to Linda. »
Coquette: » It’s just me singing Fats. We tried fixing little bits of it because I thought ‘God, this is too much like a pub singer’… but we ended up going back to the earliest mix, it just has the feeling. »
I Got Stung: « It wasn’t my favourite Elvis song, but I kept hearing ‘Holy smoke landsakes alive, I never thought this would happen to me’. That intro kept grabbing me. I thought I’ll do it a bit more raucous than Elvis. »
Honey Hush: » John and Stuart used to have a flat in Gambier Terrace. I remember waking up, burning eyes job,and one of the guys put on ‘Come into this house, stop all that yakety yak’. I’s my favourite on the whole album to sing. »
Shake A Hand: » I have this image of being in Hamburg; there was one bar that had a pool table and a great jukebox. And that was the only place I ever heard Shake A Hand. Every time we went there, I put it on. I never had the record, but I knew I wanted to do it. It always takes me back to that bar. »
Party: » Whenever we used to try and get the words, we’d get stuck on the verse… ‘Never kissed a bear, never kissed a goo!’ We could never get it. At the end, that’s me going ‘I’m not giving up man’. It seemed like a good idea to end the album on that. »
Pour réaliser ce CD, Paul McCartney a fait appel à de grands musiciens, comme David Gilmour (guitare) de Pink Floyd et Ian Paice (batterie) de Deep Purple. Il est à noter aussi la présence de Mick Green (guitare), Pete Wingfield (clavier), Dave Mattacks (batterie) and Geraint Watkin (clavier). Toute cette petite équipe a permis d’obtenir simulant cette musique, âge d’or du Rock’n’Roll.
Cependant, ce n’est pas la première fois que McCartney se frotte à ce genre de disque. En effet, le principe du disque sorti en 1988 « Choba B CCCP » est le même.
Le résultat de ce disque reste étonnant, avec des chansons plein de punchs, de vivacité, et une voix très rajeunie. On sent que Paul se libère, Paul se fait plaisir, et c’est ce qu’il recherchait. Mais ce plaisir est partagé.
Pour réconforter cette idée de musique des années 50, Paul McCartney a proposé à la vente une édition limitée et numérotée de son album assez spéciale.
Celle ci se présente sous forme d’un coffret, rappelant très fortement ceux que l’on pouvait trouver à cette époque.
A l’intérieur, l’on peut trouver huit 45 tours, entourés de répliques de pochettes d’époque.
Il est enfin à noter que cette edition contient la chanson « Fabulous » non présente sur la version CD.
En effet, en 1999, Paul McCartney a donné un concert de légende à la Cavern Club de Liverpool, (presque) au moment endroit où il avait joué avec les Beatles « quelques » années auparavant (1963). C’est encore un facteur qui démontre encore une fois la nostalgie éprouvée par Paul. Les musiciens qui l’accompagnent lors de concert sont les mêmes que ceux presents sur le CD.
